It’s time to stop hitting the snooze button on health and wellness.
Our mission is to provide individuals and businesses with effective and measurable tools as part of a holistic approach to planning for and realizing personal growth and overall well-being.
After experiencing a serious health scare that should have served as a wake-up call, my attempts at adopting healthier habits were half-hearted at best. I had always been a relatively fit guy, so it was easy to put on a façade of active living through the occasional 5 km run or hitting the weights from time to time without making real changes. As Vice President of the largest and most successful student housing company in Canada, I was living the life so many executives live – out of balance and out of touch. I was successful on the outside, but suffering on the inside.
As time went on, this cycle continued — periods of intense commitment to healthy living for a few weeks until something else distracted me and took priority over my own self-care. I was hitting the snooze button on my health and wellness. There was always tomorrow, I’d tell myself. But something had to change: I could no longer ignore the signs that had been staring me in the face for years.
“I was successful on the outside, but suffering on the inside. Something had to change: I could no longer ignore the signs that had been staring me in the face for years”
Through deep reflection and journaling, I began looking at the correlation between my healthy habits and my overall state of being. It was clear that when I was at my best – in my relationships, at work, as a parent, etc. – was when I was physically active and/or engaging in my meditation practice. From there, I noticed that the more holistic I was in my approach – exercising, mediating, and journaling daily – the more effective and consistent my practices had become. One practice fed off the other and I felt like I had finally found the formula for being the best version of myself I could be.
This is one of those moments in life you cannot ignore. The snooze button was no longer an option as it was time to seize control over my health and wellness without excuses. Through this autoethnographic method, sometimes called ME-search, I began to craft a lifestyle plan based on a simple, tangible, and authentic approach to my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
This discovery led me to develop Commit 20 and Be. Grow. Do. Become.: programs to help others develop sustainable habits for a healthy lifestyle. As I have written my story, I want to help others do the same.
